When school ended for the semester, I completely intended to work almost everyday, make some cash, and end vacation with a fat bank account. It really didn't end up working out like that, but I think it's better that way.
Instead, I've been catching up with anyone and everyone who has ever been a friend of mine... just running around being a freaking social butterfly, I am. IT'S FABULOUS. Just check out this pic of Leen and I at Matt's Christmas party where we thought it would be a great idea to drink Cuervo straight from the bottle and also, if you look real closely under that middle cup, you can see that we also thought it would be amusing to handcuff ourselves to each other. It was fun, from what I remember. Oh shit, and I got the whole first season of Golden Girls from that party... can't beat that.
Anyway, there are only a few days of vacay left so I'm headed to Chicago to check out some friends and some sights, it should be incredible. Oh, what? I was supposed to work tonight? I dunno... I really feel like hitting the mall.

My Sentiments Exactly
I love Dre Bly for good now (as though I didn't before), many props to him for taking a stand against the real problem, Joey Harrington:
"One guy in particular ... is the cause of this whole thing," Bly said on the NFL Network. "It's not hard to figure out. ... The quarterback here has been bad. ... He has not really gotten the job done ever since I have been here. ... I really believe Coach would not have been fired if Jeff (Garcia) would have been healthy."
And he expounded to the Free Press.
"Joey's been here four years," he said, "and being the No. 3 pick in the draft, he hasn't given us anything."

New Favorite Channel
Not that I really should be watching any television at all with all of the homework that I have, but lately I just cannot resist A&E. I am a reality TV junkie, and shows like Dog the Bounty Hunter, Growing Up Gotti, and most especially Reality 1, really capture my fancy. If you haven't been fortunate enough to catch an episode of Reality 1, I highly suggest it. Basically these two guys go around the country, find random people down on their luck, and attempt to hook them up with people who can help them get on top of things or achieve their life long dreams. So love it.

Happy Bunny
I know Happy Bunny is kinda played out (at least I think he is) but there are some things he says that I will always find funny. Like that little tin of mints that has "POISON" crossed out and "Mints for Friend" written in. Or this, which is so very, very true.

Jake's in the Element
My dear friend Jacob is the proud new owner of a brand new beautiful Honda Element. I'm extremely excited about this because it was the vehicle that I was advocating for him to get. When he took me for a ride in it, I was not dissapointed. It's beautiful! Not only does it lack the weird black plastic on the outside of previous models, the interior is way cooler than I expected. "Stadium seating" in the back seat, a massive sunroof, and seats that fold down to make a giant bed for camping make it into one of the most amazing things I have experienced (I know, I need to get out more).
But now I'm jealous... not that I don't love my "new" Geo, it's just dang, that thing is a beaut.

The Usual Suspects
I'm sitting upstairs at Rendez-Vous again (I know you are surprised), attempting to finish this paper that's been giving me a lot more trouble than I expected (bad paper, No!) and it is super quiet up here. This can obviously be explained by the UofM/Ohio State game that's going on at the moment, you know everyone in town is either there or at a tailgate or something.
Except for not everyone is there... I'm not there, and neither is my little Rendez-Vous family. The Usual Suspects, as I so fondly call them. The group of individuals that come here every day to study, like me. I don't know their names, nor do I really care to, but I know they've got my back. And I've got theirs. How sweet.

Smita the Viking
Hey peeps, check out this cute halloween pic of Smita and her friends as Vikings. She's the one on the left, in case you can't guess. Adorable!
Love the pic but it sure does make me miss her!

My Pal Willie
I've loved Willie Nelson since I was a very small child, and that love has never waned. I find his voice and song selection positively soothing, and it is highly conducive to my study habits (one earphone bud in, one out). God, I love this man. He must be like a hundred years old or something, huh? I hope he lives a hundred more.
I think what I'm trying to say is that I want Willie Nelson to be my buddy. For some reason, I don't think he's really going to go for that.

KTC Needs
I forget what those things are called, where someone emails you a bunch of questions about yourself and then you're supposed to fill it out and send it to all your friends with the hope that they will do the same. The new, internet savvy, bastardized form of the age-old chainletter. I almost never respond to those, with the exception of if they are from my mother (she gets mad if I don't), if they are super short and from a good friend, or if they are really innovative and fun. I stumbled across this one, and I really like it... very funny and interesting to do.
So what you do is go to google and type in "[your name] needs" (yes, in quotes) and copy and paste the sentences that come up in the list of results. It's great, at least I think so.
Here are my lists and you people better paste yours in the comments or your family will be cursed for at least 7 years (okay, maybe not, but do it anyway).
KTC needs...
KTC needs to hear from you about the future of our club.
KTC needs to start petitioning the appropriate authority.
KTC needs to consider this
"new" technology.
KTC needs help with fund raising.
KTC needs your help!
KTC needs some challenges!
Katie needs... (guess how many of these are about recent Scientology phenomenon Katie Holmes)
Katie needs to go.
Katie needs a project manager.
Katie needs to follow up.
Katie needs to get a grip.
Katie needs to figure out if she wants to move forward, maintain old friends, or what kind of person she is going to be.
Katie needs to say no.
Katie needs love and affection.
Katie needs to talk to her friend.
Katie needs a quiet(ish) life.
Katie needs help but she deserves a second chance.
Katie needs extra time.
Katie needs a C-section.
Katie needs to stay away from those negative web sites and focus on what she needs to do!
Katie needs to run far, far away.

"New" Car
Thanks to the generosity of mankind, I've finally gotten some wheels. A friend of a friend was trying to get rid of a well-running 1990 Geo, and he gave it to me for FREE. Are you kidding? That's amazing. And for sure will get me around town for emergencys and late night studying which is all I really need.
It's insured, I've still got to get it registered, but I'm SO RELIEVED. It will be so nice to have that aspect of independence back. Thanks to all who simpathized with my plight, and thanks even more so to those who carted me around the last few days.
WOO HOO! I've got some wheels!

Don Vito's Dog
This might be kinda a weird post. We'll see how it turns out, but I apologize in advance if it sucks.
People watching in the morning while I am waiting for the bus is really interesting. I see all kinds of people: kids going to school, business men walking downtown to work, and of course runners and bikers (damn people with too much motivation and energy, I hate them). Sometimes, and always when I am waiting out there around 7:30, I see Don Vito walking his dog. You understand that this guy is not the actual Don Vito, but that's what I have named him. They look very similar.
As if it wasn't weird or amusing enough that the dude looks like Mr. Vito, what he does every morning is equally strange. He parks his car on the street in front of my bus stop, gets the dog out and walks away. About five minutes later, he comes back. Without the dog!! The first time I saw this, I immediately thought the worst... Don Vito had ditched the dog somewhere in Eberwhite Woods or totally abandoned him elsewhere. I did think that it was possible that someone dogsits for him during the day, but then, what is the point of parking the car so far from the destination?
You will be happy to know that since that first time, I've seen the dog again, so he's not tied up to a random tree somewhere. But I'm still curious about what Vito is doing. So I made up a story about it that rather suits me.
So this is what is going on. Vito and his (now ex) wife just went through a messy divorce, mainly because she thought that he was fat, lazy, and didn't take care of himself. She just couldn't stand that he couldn't make some sort of effort, even when she threatened to leave him. So, hence the divorce. But they had this dog, see, and they both loved him a lot so they decided to do the joint custody thing. She works from home so she gets the dog during the day while Vito is at work.
Now, in an effort to impress and possibly win back his ex-wife, Don tells her that he is exercizing by walking the dog all the way from his apartment to her house every day. Unfortunately, he can't actually bring himself to do this, so he parks the few blocks away so she won't see him drive up.
Well, there you go. I'm pretty strange, huh? This is what I think about while on the bus. A girl can't study all the time.

Third Annual Liberty Halloween Party
Hmm... don't really know what to say about the party except it was stressful but very fun. People got drunk and effed up my house, I dropped a camera that wasn't mine on the kitchen floor (yes, it broke), and Brad's brother almost pissed in my recycling bin. Wait, did I say it was fun?
I guess it was, but I don't want to do it ever again. So when next Halloween is approaching and I start yapping on about having a party, please, please remind me of this post.
I think the best thing about the party was the costumes. Everyone looked amazing. Among my favorites: Metrosexual Satan, Spaceghost, David Bowie from Labrynth, Joe Dirt, and members of Team Zissou. Of course, you can see that Keri and I looked great, as the goddess Nike and a Detroit Lion, respectively.

Fight!
The oddest thing happened last night while I was studying at Rendez-Vous. There was a brawl, can you believe it? The Vous is just a little coffee shop on campus, usually pretty quiet setting for the usual, regular group that always hangs out there. Not last night.
Some girlfriends and I were sitting there, minding our own business, when out of nowhere this guy (we'll call him "Crazy" from here) approaches this other guy ("Random" from now on) and ferociously asks him if he has a problem. Up to this point, Random had been doing homework on his laptop and listening to his headphones. He took the phones off, and asked Crazy what he said. Even louder, Crazy yells,
"Hey man, DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM?" At which point all of Rendez-Vous turns to stare.
Without warning, Crazy hauls back and punches Random in the face. Random jumps up to defend himself as Crazy attempts to push him over the stairway railing. Random manages to get into the middle of the room (away from the dangerous railing) but Crazy is still attached to him, throwing punches like a madman. Other guys jumped into the fight, creating an all out brawl. Eventually Crazy got pinned to the floor and Random could get away.
Three guys were holding Crazy back because he was seriously intent on whooping Random's ass. Random went downstairs to hopefully calm Crazy down, which worked well enough until the cops came. The ensuing questioning of Crazy was very interesting and telling of his serious mental illness, but I don't have time to go into that here.
I was just absolutely amazed at how quickly this event occured and out of the middle of nothing. And in Rendez-Vous, no less... it's not like I was hanging out at Deja Vu or The Elbow Room, for crying out loud.

Ben Folds, My True Love
Yep, I'm gonna do it... gonna talk about Ben some more, and immediately following another Ben post... dang. But seriously, I wanted to let everyone know what an awesome time I had at the show, thought no one would care, and then Alicia goes and asks me to write a post about how it was... so here I am to write about it. Yay!
The show was amazing, Ben was (is) amazing. He was probably technically better than I have ever seen him before, and he played some really good, really old shit, which I did not expect but was absolutely fabulous. Unfortunately he didn't touch the LP that I'm currently obsessed with, and also unfortunately played that one little song that drives me quite crazy (yes people, you've heard it, Brick, it was totally ruined and overplayed, now get over it). But as usual I was blown away by his showmanship, humor, and freaking unbelievable talent. Anna really liked it a lot, which made me very happy. All in all, the second best show I've ever seen of Ben's.
Second best? Why, you ask? Well... the venue itself (Miller Auditorium in Kalamazoo) was beautiful (and we had fab front row balcony seats) but it's surroundings absolutely blew. I don't know if any of you have ever been to K-zoo or Western Michigan University, but I seriously suggest avoiding it if you can. There is positively nothing to do, no where to eat or have a beer on campus, the roads are all freaking confusing, and the people... well, the people there were totally lame. They all looked the same (floppy haired skater boyz and sorority chicas) and generally acted in a rather, um... immature fashion? I'm trying to describe them without totally offending someone. But anyway, they (the people) and it (the campus) pissed me off royally and I hope not to return.
Ben. Seriously. Come to Ann Arbor, leave that other shit out of this.

Best Weekend Ever
So, so quick today... I really don't even have time to be posting this, but I promised I would speak of my "rewards" for studying so hard lately, and the time has finally come.
In a half hour, Anna and I are leaving to see Ben Folds in Kalamazoo. If you know me at all, you know that I can hardly contain my excitement and I'm absolutely dying to see Ben in all his glory- his live performance is unbeatable, in my humble opinion. Also, Anna is a Ben Folds Concert Virgin, so she has no idea what is in store. I can't wait to see how much she loves it (I know she will).
Also, tomorrow is our third annual halloween party. If you haven't been invited, it's either cause I never see you anymore or I just plain don't like you. If it's the former, feel free to stop by. This party is stressing me out to no end, but everyone seems really excited and the costumes sound like they will be really cool this year. Excited, excited.
Finally, in an unexpected reward that actually happened last weekend, Jeff Garcia started for the Lions and they beat the Browns (most important game of the season so far this year for me because of the heated rivalry that Jacob, from Cleveland and I, from Detroit have). Unfortunately I am probably not going to be able to watch the game this Sunday because of the mass amounts of homework I still have to do, but oh well.
Dang, too long, gotta go! Have a good weekend, as I know mine will be absolutely SMASHING!

KTC Heaven
I imagine that if I had four baby monkeys clinging to my limbs, I would be in absolute ecstacy. I look at this picture and think, "oh, man, I wish that was me!" Except for the male/goatee part, that wouldn't be too good. But the baby monkey thing, that is just absolutely fabulous. What a lucky guy.

I'm Going to Tell You a Secret
When I first heard about Madonna's new movie, a documentary of her last tour called "I'm Going to Tell You a Secret," I thought the normal things you might think, like, "probably a has-been publicity stunt," and, "most likely some Kabbalah propaganda bullshit," but I actually enjoyed it.
I was feeling all depressed and couldn't possibly study, but there was nothing else on TV. MTV was showing the movie premier with no commercials, so Danjo and I decided to check it out. The first five minutes or so were exactly what I expected: obscure, weird, and not interesting to me at all.
But then it was just cool and chill... a behind the scenes view of Madonna's tour, complete with cute video opps from the kids and Guy Ritchie (what a catch, by the way). I was especially impressed when she spoke about her marriage and her view on soulmates. She said that if you ever find anyone who you think is perfect, run in the other direction, because your view is obviously skewed (we all know no one is perfect but man, can that be clouded by the puppy love that comes with a new relationship). A soulmate is someone who will challenge you, piss you off, and still be there when the dust settles. Amen, sista!
So anyways, I was surprized that I liked the movie as much as I did. I'm not saying it was the best ever, or that you should run out and see it, just that it could have been a lot worse. And also, it would be so incredibly sweet to be traveling around on tour with Madonna. Alas, a girl can dream...

GO LIONS
I forgot to mention at the beginning of last week that the Lions actually won a game! Faboo! Hopefully they can sock it to the Panthers tomorrow as well, but who knows. I heard that Garcia was practicing this week and should be good to go by next weekend. Thank GOD. And when that doesn't work out and they still lose all the time, I should be about ready to go into the midseason depression tailspin that inevitably strikes every year.
Someone get me this belt buckle for Christmas please. Too cute.

I don't really have time today to say much except that for some reason I find this picture incredibly weird, a little scary, and very hot all at the same time. Hope you enjoy it as well.

Dinner at the Seabury Farm
Wow, I just had the best day... Earlier this month I bid in a silent auction (benefiting Katrina victims) on a dinner with a social work prof who has his own organic farm. Today I finally got to go, and it was amazing.
The Seabury Farm is 93 acres and is the home to tons of cows, a herd of sheep, pigs, more barn kitties than I could count, and two adorable border collies. As you can probably guess, I was in animal heaven.
The farm also yeilds pumpkins, squash, broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, and much more. YUM! Dinner was delicious.
The conversation was amazing as well. There were five other MSW students who were all very nice and interesting to talk to. But I really enjoyed talking to Mrs. Seabury, who has a private practice and works a lot with people who have cult involvement and have been diagnosed with dissasociative identity disorder (formerly multiple personality disorder). I've been interested in that shit since I was a kid so it was pretty enthralling to talk to her.
I feel so good now, like I'm doing what I should be doing, and also that I might make it out of school alive. Speaking of which, I had totally planned on coming home and studying, but I'm willing to bet that it's not going to happen because my belly is full and I had two glasses of (fabulous) wine with dinner. I really just feel like sitting here and watching the Made marathon on MTV.
Willpower? Can't find it. Let those books sit in the backpack till tomorrow.

The Amazing Race
I realize there's a TV theme happening here on Things Loved, and TV is a brain consumer, it's bad, and all that, but let's go with it. I have been getting most of my enjoyment out of the few television programs that I watch because they allow me to escape from the reality of school for 30 to 60 minutes.
I have actually been fairly reluctant to post about my very favorite show in the world, The Amazing Race. Previous to this season it has always been a whirlwind of scary, intricate activities carried out by a harried team of two, certainly with an incredibly interesting relationship. This season is a little different. Okay, a lot different. I'm not sure if I like it yet.
It's the first Amazing Race: Family Edition. The first apparent difference in the show is that there are four people on a team. Sounds interesting- more people, more conflict, right? Not really... there's one family that bickers bitterly but the rest seem to get along for the most part. The challenges are MUCH easier, probably because of the teams with children. This is evidenced by the multiple parents I have seen smoking cigarettes. On the original Amazing Race, you would have to be a dumbass to smoke a cigarette, as you are running around the world climbing mountains and shit, the last thing you would want to do is run out of breath.
Which brings me to the next reason that this season kind of well, sucks... instead of traveling the world, it seems that this Amazing Race will stay in the United States. I can see how it would be difficult to get teams of four on a plane together, but how boring. It's no longer cool to see the teams rush through a place that you've been ("There's Red Square! The Kremlin! I've been there!") since most everyone has traveled around the US ("Washington DC! I've been there!" "Yep, you and everyone else..."). Not so amazing.
I know you are wondering if I am going to give up on my self proclaimed favorite show ever. The answer is no, and it's for one very good, very sexy reason: Phil Keoghan. Now THAT'S amazing.

Arrested Development
The funniest show on television, and perhaps the only thing that I watch that isn't cartoon or reality.... oh, how I love my Bluth family. I'm so happy we're smack at the beginning of season 3, it makes my Mondays more bearable and every other day of the week excruciating waiting for the next episode.
I may have laughed so hard this week that I fell on the floor... only my favorite TV family has a stair car and a cabin car, so you have to "watch out for bridges and hop-ons cause you will get some hop-ons," and "watch out for live-ins cause you will get some live-ins."
I realize that some reading this might not follow the show and may not find this very interesting or funny at all, but I personally just cracked up while writing that (thank God no one else is upstairs at Rendez-Vous at this ungodly hour). In fact I just read it again and I am still chuckling.
The funniest moment in the last episode, however, had to be in the preview for next week, when we find that Scott Baio will be playing the Bluth family's new lawyer, Bob Loblaw. Not very funny yet? Say it fast... Bob Loblaw. Ba-blah-blah. Ba-blah-blah!
I'm not sure how this is coming off over the computer, it could be totally lame, but I am finding it terribly amusing. And frankly, that's all that really matters here.
Ba-blah-blah!

..... the Whole World Smiles With You
Eh, kind of an obscure post today... I've been meaning to share this pic of Kelly wearing a slightly maniacal grin, so there you go. Does it make you grin too? No? Me niether, it's too damn early in the morning. But maybe for you, reading this post, it's mid afternoon, you just woke up from a good ten hours of sleep, you've got your OJ and Special K and Kelly is just really making you smile right now. That's good. Good for you.
Me? Do I sound kinda grouchy today? I feel grouchy. I'm sitting upstairs at Rendez-Vous watching the minutes tick away until class starts and really wishing I had an IV cause the coffee isn't getting into my system fast enough. I've got two papers due (in one class, what crap) tomorrow, one is done and the other isn't even started. Looks like it's going to be a long day.
At least it's not raining. Just kidding, it's like a torrential downpour out there. Hurricane Rita in Michigan, even. Aren't you glad you read Things Loved today? Rather cheery wasn't it?

World's Ugliest Dog
In case you can't tell by the lack of posts lately, I am really busy with school. It's been super tough (much more difficult than I expected) but I am getting used to it. But I just got my BRAND NEW LAPTOP (if you've seen my old computer- circa 1998- you understand how exited I am) so I will be able to handle the workload a little better and also procrastinate by posting on these silly little blogs.
In a totally unrelated matter, I thought I'd show you all this lovely pic in case you'd never seen Sam, the winner of The Worlds Ugliest Dog Contest for the past 3 years. He is a 14-year-old pedigreed Chinese something or other, and isn't he adorable?? Imagine waking up to him cuddling with you in the morning. I imagine it would be a serious shock each time.

Happy Birthday Colleen (and Anna)!
A little bit of a joint birthday post on this one, but I don't think the girls will mind. Let me say right off that this picture is NOT of Colleen and Anna, it's of Colleen and KC (Colleen not to be confused with the oft mentioned Leen, and KC not to be confused with KTC- me). But I don't have a picture of the two of them together. Want to see a cute pic of Anna? Hit the post titled "Girlfriends" in the archives and she's the cutie dressed up as catwoman.
Anyway, let's get into it. Colleen was the first person that I met when I started working at the Peak, and I'm pretty sure that I was intimidated by her (who am I kidding, I was terrified). I learned eventually, however, that she has a very dirty sense of humor that could make me laugh on even the worst nights at work. She would always draw this little character called Boxface on coasters, which I loved because he was quirky/cute, and I always support the frivolous wasting of coasters (5 cents apeice, take that Shelde's). Colleen is a great friend, she always seems to know what I'm thinking. She's moving to NYC here pretty soon, and I will miss her dearly (look for a farewell post on Things Hated), but that just means there is one more person who I can visit when I am in the city. Hooray.
On to Anna... I remember the first day she started work at the Peak. My friend Mark came up to me with this stricken look on his face and told me a story about some girl he had hooked up with and never called, and now! Now she was working with us. I thought it was pretty funny (although I thought he was dumb as hell for not calling her, she's a hottie) and I had no idea that years down the line I would be calling Anna a good friend. And she is. She also shares my love for monkeys, and anyone who loves monkeys is just all right with me.
Happy Birthday, Ladies. Love ya!

Getting the Hell Out of Dodge
To start, let me say that I have used the phrase "I'm getting the hell out of dodge" for years and years, not realizing that I really have no idea what that means. To me, it means, I'm leaving and you can not come with me, or I'm leaving because I'm sick of you and your shit. But I just looked it up and it's really a phrase from old Western movies and it originally referred to Dodge City, Kansas. Apparently when the bad guys were beaten by the good guys, they were commanded to get the hell out of Dodge. Don't you find that incredibly interesting? Me too.
Anyway, I'm leaving town for the weekend to housesit for my mom, which I think will be a very good thing. Not only do I get to hang out with Leia the Dog and Dutchess the Cat, but I will also certainly get some studying done so I will be all caught up for next week. Which means that I can actually start on the mounds of homework that all of this reading is supposed to apply to.
I also have some other plans for my mini vacation which include walking around the lake listening to Ben Folds on my iPod, having a drink at the best redneck bar in town, maybe going to see if Hector and Jimmy's still exists, oh, and I was going to catch up on some blog entries...
So it remains to be seen exactly how I will fit all of this into the few days (about 2) that I have, but I'm going to try. I'm actually kind of hoping that the laptop that I have coming in the mail (woo hoo) will not come today before I leave because then all of my plans will fly out the window so that I can tinker with it. I should really start packing, maybe after I waste a little more time on the internet.

A Wonderful Roommate
This guy (admittedly he doesn't usually look like this, this is a Halloween pic, duh) has been making me extremely happy recently. His name is Danjo, and he is my one sane roommate (out of two). He recently underwent foot surgery and was layed up in East Lansing for three months, so I forgot what it was like to have him around the house.
I came back from my dad's last night and the living room carpet had been cleaned. Let me tell you, that carpet was nasty when we moved in here two years ago, but now it looks almost new. Better than I have ever seen it or ever even imagined it. Danjo also cleaned my fishtank (admittedly I have some more work to do on it but it is a pain in the ass and I am lazy) and he found this plaque-like thingy that my dad got me (years ago) that says "Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much," and hung it in the perfect place above our dining room table.
Oh Danjo, I love him so much right now. I got all veclemped last night when I walked in to see the house in the state that it was. It's not that I can't do this stuff myself... well, yes, I guess it is. I'm a slothful, dirty bastard who is lucky to have a wonderful roommate. If only I could replace the other one (yes Brad, that means you, shape up before I post about you on Things Hated).

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!!
Real quick today... I just wanted to say that even with all the negativity and bullshit that I've been hearing since some crazy stuff went down in pre-season (my dear, beloved Jeff Garcia with his fractured fibula), I am really looking forward to the first Lions game of the season in just two short days. Lions football is a crazy passion of mine, and I'm sure that you, my faithful readers, will become extremely tired of my opinionated commentary throughout the season. Please bear with me.

A New Chapter: In School Again!
After a year of slogging around town, partying too much and generally wasting my time, I have joined the ranks of the scholarly once again. Though this time is different in a few significant ways:
1. The building that I spend my days in is NOT a million years old, neglected, and far from the University's rehabilitation radar.
2. They tell ME what classes to take. I was a "comprehensive communications" major in my undergrad. (Translation: which theater, radio, or otherwise cushy elective courses would I like to take this semester?)
3. Books! Books? Five hundred dollars worth of books! (See above: theater classes don't require hardcovers)
4. Ann Arbor: got to love it. Not to bash the fine city of Ypsilanti (my previous campus), but this is my home. And, I look smarter cause I'm one of the only people in my program who doesn't get lost all the time.
I could go on. It is weird being back in school, especially because I never pictured myself at U of M until a few months ago. And parts of it are going to take some getting used to (a good football team) but I am incredibly contented at the moment to be stepping off the cliff into this new chapter of my life.
Oh, but don't let me forget about the artwork! This picture is by Kurt Halsey Frederiksen, one of my new favorite artists. He's got lots more creative stuff on his website, you should check it out.

Vacation and Sleep
I've officially had two days of vacation and I have two days left. Smack in the middle right now. Let's reflect, shall we?
Day one... hmm... let me think... well, I guess Thursday night was officially day one, since Leen and I went out pretty early after we were done at school. We hung out on the patio at Chucks and then went over to the Alley Bar. I was kinda tired, left early (so 1 am is early to me, so what? Pre- last call is early) and went to bed. Friday night was chill, my roommie Danjo finally moved back into town so we hung out here. Last night... last night was too much. Party in Ypsi* at Weber's new place (I haven't partied in Ypsi in years so it was some unusual fun) and then I got back here around, I dunno... four in the morning. Fun!
This vacation so far has also been about sleep! I got myself used to getting up early for orientation, so I've generally been waking up between 8 and 9 and then fighting with myself to sleep for a few more hours. Some days it works, and some days it doesn't. Today: 11:00! Fabulous sleep in time!
What am I going to do with my two remaining days of freedom, you ask? Well, it is Sunday night so I would be willing to bet you could find me at the Heidelburg this evening (although today should be about running errands, come on, you can do it, KTC!). Tomorrow is Labor Day, and I will be at the lake. Yay!
*I do need to give a little shout out here, to my friend Nick Oas from high school. He had a birthday bash in Ypsi yesterday that I definately should have gone to, but I have social phobias around people I don't know, and especially around people I do know from my hometown. Not Nick. But other people. Well, that is that. Happy birthday, dude.

Last Night at the Peak!
Aaaaahhhh, a sigh of relief. Last night was my "last night" at Grizzly Peak. This is not the first time that this has happened, and it may happen again considering that my employment is still not really terminated but I'm not going to pick up any shifts for awhile. A long while, if I have my way.
The one thing that I will always treasure about my time spent at the Peak is the esteemed friends that I have made in the last three years while working there. They were splendid last night, all out in full effect to celebrate my moving outward and upward. We went to Old Town after work and then a few dear, sweet comrades came back to my place where we reminisced over old photos and funny stories until all hours of the morning.
I woke up this afternoon (actually Jacob woke me up at 10:30, the bastard, then I went back to sleep) with the warm fuzzy feeling of being truly loved. My friends have a way of doing that to me. Now I've got to go dye my hair before I get all gushy.

Bouncy Ball Heaven
I can not even imagine the utter delight that would come from watching 100,000 bouncy balls get dumped onto the hilly streets of San Fransico. Pure joy, I'm sure.

Major Deja Vu
I'm not going to go off on some sappy tirade right now, I just want to say that it's great to have Leen back in town, it's like she never even left! I have to say, however, that I am a little nervous to see what happens in the two weeks before we actually have to start school and be responsible (or pretend at least, who am I kidding). We have the tendancy to cause trouble and I can already see it happening.
I think I'm ready.
I think I'm ready.

Happy Birthday, Keri!!
Ah, one of my favorite days of the year, my beloved girlfriend Keri's birthday. In case anyone is not aware, it is mandatory to wear green on this day (and you get bonus points for accessorizing with pink), oh and of course you must also get drunk. Unfortunately, Keri has to work this evening so unless a miracle happens (which I certainly am holding out for) our annual fancy dinner will be missed. However, Leopold's is open until 2 and that is where we will be after the dreadful daily grind is over. For sure.
Let me just say a few words about why I love Keri: She has a love and tolerance for the human race that I can never quite manage; she is an amazing, truly talented artist that is never compromised and always creative to the max; and she comes over to my house to play board games with me when I am world-weary.
Besides all that sappiness, Keri's really really fun to get drunk with. Bring it on.

Shopping Cart Races
I randomly ended up going to the shopping cart races downtown last night, and it was super crazy. There were considerably more spectators than racing carts this year, but it felt rather powerful to walk down the middle of Main Street with thousands of punks, hippies, and townies; causing all traffic to cease and mostly pissing off everyone not participating.
We walked a mile or two to the finish line, where they were shooting off fireworks and generally having a great time, so of course the cops came. Did I say cops? I meant to say every single police officer in the Ann Arbor area. I do love standing around knowing that there isn't jack they can do to me, so we did that for awhile, then headed back.
All in all a pretty surreal experience. I couldn't help thinking a few times though, "if all of the cops are here, you could get away with anything on the other side of town." I will certainly have to keep that in mind for next year.

Girlfriends Tribute
A friend from years back mentioned something to me the other day that alluded to an untruth: that I rarely get along with women. I thought about it and realized that while this had been true in high school and a few years following, it couldn't be farther from the truth at this point in my life. After I uploaded a bunch of pictures to a "Girlfriends" set on flickr to prove to my friend that he was wrong (he is currently in Arizona and not around to view my social circle), I spent a few days thinking about what allowed this change to come about in my friendship patterns.
I think that the answer is obvious. I hated most everyone I went to high school with (and, frankly, most people in my home town and surrounding areas), and now I live in an environment where I pick and choose who I hang out with. This arrangement works much better for me, as I can be rather strict in regards to who I am friends with. And once someone is my friend (especially a girlfriend), I tend to have an almost undying loyalty to them and theirs.
These are a few of my truly adored girlfriends at Halloween. See, Mike? Girlfriends!

Happy Birthday, Reda!
As has become tradition on Things Loved, I must send all of my dear friends much love and happiness on their birthdays, and because I rarely get to see this esteemed amigo, this birthday wish is especially important.
After living with Reda for a year, I discovered a friend who could party far harder than me and wake up in the kind of cheery nonchalant mood that I could never truly master. I've learned a lot from him, which you can surely tell by his impish grin. So, Happy Birthday Reda, and you can expect me on your couch the next time I visit NYC.

dETROITfUNK
I love Detroit!
The other day, I stumbled upon a great website called dETROITfUNK, which features some amazing pictures of the city. Some of the pictures are so beautiful, showing the intricate details that are so often missed, while others sadly show the unfortunate deterioration of the once handsome metropolis. Other pictures are just straight hilarious, I think I laughed for a good five minutes while reading today's post.
You just must check it out, there is a link to your right under Links (duh). I've added a few more sweet sites as well.

Happy Birthday Brad!!
Oh, it's the roommies birthday! We actually celebrated last night with a Mexican feast at The Prickly Pear and then free beers at the UA pipefitters festival downtown. What fun!
This is an awesome picture of Brad and Smita, is it not? There's an equally funny one on Things Hated, just for fun.

My Bed
My bed is TOO cozy. Even in the summer I've got sheets, three comforters, a blanket, two large and two small pillows all creating total comfort on a massive (biggest I've ever had, so be quiet) queen sized.
It is so comfortable, in fact, that I am going to procrastinate on all of the things I must do today, and get back in there.

Bear Vs. Shark
The link to this band's website has been under links on this page for awhile, I don't know if anyone has checked it out, but you should! I went to high school with a few of these boys (although we didn't meet until a few years later) and they are all great guys, plus talented to the max! Anyway, they have been touring a lot recently (my best friend in Kentucky saw them the other day) and right now they are featured on PETA's website!
Holy cow, imagine my surprise when I am reading my weekly PETA newsletter (insert tree hugging hippie joke here) and I see the article Guess Which Band Wouldn't Eat a Bear or a Shark? Bear Vs. Shark up in my email inbox! That's hot!

Best Dinner Ever
I have been craving shellfish, mainly crabs legs, for oh, about a year now. I FINALLY got out to Red Lobster last night and ate a pound of them! I was so full, I came home and pretty much fell right asleep. It was an incredible food coma, and I'm glad I was a part of it. But now, I must go for a bike ride.

Too Much Fun
Wow... I love the Heidelberg on Sunday nights! I don't understand why sometimes I don't go, or I wrestle with myself, "Should I go or just stay in tonight?" Even though I have Mondays off. BUT, I made it last night, and it was awesome! The combination of Billy behind the bar (really excellent drinks and no REAL last call), some sweet people, and oh yeah, service appreciation night so it's cheap! Highlights of last night: Gabe and his new live in girlfriend Jess pulling pranks on Ian and pissing off some hostess's boyfriend by trying to take her home for a threesome. And also, I stole my new bestest friend, David, away from all the freaking stupid little girls that host at the GP and we talked for, oh, I don't know, TWO HOURS! I woke up this morning, all, "I love David!" Alas, he plays for the other team. A girl can dream though!

Interesting...
I can't remember where in the world wide web it was that I found this gem... but I was going through my collection of weird monkey pictures and found it. Thought I'd share it with you all; be sure to notice the strange, strange expression on the monkey's face.

In Need of Some Foriegn Flair
I'm feeling sick of the USA today. My dad just got back from Berlin and as he was recounting his travels to me, I was reminded that it has been 8 long years since I have been out of the country (not including Canada because Canada does not count). I spent some time as an exchange student in high school in a little town called Tarasovka, right outside of Moscow, Russia. I also spent a good amount of time in St. Petersburg. I was looking through my photos last night and found picture after picture of St. Basil's Cathedral and I remember how powerful of an experience it was to walk into Red Square and see this amazing structure, like nothing I had ever seen before. I am craving that experience again. Not that I can afford it, but I am thinking of all the places I would like to go. Right now Ireland seems to be the front runner. Although Amsterdam has always had that, ahem, certain appeal.

Welcome, Black Mollies!
All right, I let the fish tank sit for a few days and now I am "cycling" it with some cute black mollies. They are tiny in comparison to the tank, but they swim around like mad and they seem to like the new decorations I got for them.
I've been testing the waters and researching different kinds of aquariums and fish and all that, in the hopes that I might actually keep some of them alive this time. If all goes well, I'll get some more fish in a week or two. If they live, I might even trust myself with a hamster.
