In Need of Some Foriegn Flair

I'm feeling sick of the USA today. My dad just got back from Berlin and as he was recounting his travels to me, I was reminded that it has been 8 long years since I have been out of the country (not including Canada because Canada does not count). I spent some time as an exchange student in high school in a little town called Tarasovka, right outside of Moscow, Russia. I also spent a good amount of time in St. Petersburg. I was looking through my photos last night and found picture after picture of St. Basil's Cathedral and I remember how powerful of an experience it was to walk into Red Square and see this amazing structure, like nothing I had ever seen before. I am craving that experience again. Not that I can afford it, but I am thinking of all the places I would like to go. Right now Ireland seems to be the front runner. Although Amsterdam has always had that, ahem, certain appeal.

Welcome, Black Mollies!

All right, I let the fish tank sit for a few days and now I am "cycling" it with some cute black mollies. They are tiny in comparison to the tank, but they swim around like mad and they seem to like the new decorations I got for them.

I've been testing the waters and researching different kinds of aquariums and fish and all that, in the hopes that I might actually keep some of them alive this time. If all goes well, I'll get some more fish in a week or two. If they live, I might even trust myself with a hamster.

Annual Post Art Fair Party

It's bound to happen once a year, and I haven't missed one yet... the Charley's after art fair party. This one was pretty good... mostly good because of the hilarious pimps and hos wandering about the upstairs of Chucks. The night turned into a drunken mess: I saw girls falling off of their chairs, guys trying to hump anything that moved on the dance floor, and *gasp* an almost fight between two of my friends. Terrible. But I guess I must have been enjoying myself a little bit, since I stayed out until SIX IN THE MORNING! I haven't done that since I was a member of the Charley's crew myself. Jeez, I must have been feeling youthful that night or something. I have some more great pictures from this party (thanks lisaural) so stay tuned for more pimps and hos coming your way!

Ann Arbor Art Fair

I can hardly believe that I am categorizing the Art Fair under Things Loved, but for the first time in my life, I really do like it. This is the first year in SIX LONG YEARS that I am not waiting tables smack in the middle of the chaos downtown. I got to walk around with my mom today and saw some pretty cool stuff, as well as a lot of crap (i.e. art on a stick). Oh and I got REALLY sun burned. But it was great exercise and you can not beat the people watching. My favorite part? The Acme garage sale of course! I found a great italian tin recipe box that matches others that I bought years ago. Score!

The Detroit News/John T. Greilick

Hey there I am! I mentioned earlier that I got interviewed by The Detroit News when I went horseback riding, and you can read the story here.

Not a fan of the picture cause my mom made me wear a helmet (yes I am 24 years old) and it was falling off my head the whole time. Also this was right before I was able to tone down my shocking bleach blonde hair. But it's kinda cool to be in the paper, anyway.

Welcome Home, Leen!!

I'm so happy right now I could cry, this girl is coming home to Michigan!! This return trip obviously has nothing to do with her getting into U of M Law School (congrats, babe) and everything to do with the fact that being away from me for a year has been devastating. I have a friend in grad school with me now, which is thrilling, especially since the law quad and social work school are right next to each other. Here is the real challenge: Learn to study together a little more and drink together a little less. Hmm. We'll see how that one goes.

Horseback Riding

Originally uploaded by primalktc.
I used to have my own horses and I didn't get out to ride them nearly enough. I've only got one now and she is not trained and also a total bitch. So yesterday my mom and I went to a state park to go on a trail ride. It was really fun and definately made me want to get some more horses to ride. I've been looking online all day, like I have the money to buy a horse. Hey but my dad does, add that to the Christmas list.
Anyways, highlights of horseback riding included being interviewed by the Detroit News (look for me in Monday's edition), a crazy man on one of those three wheeled lie down bike things that scared the horses, and oh yeah, my mother and I got into a huge fight. What a lovely day.

Ben Folds Speaks My Language

Mr. Ben
Originally uploaded by primalktc.
I've posted about Ben Folds before... and I don't expect that this will be the last post on the subject. I go through periods of my life where I need to listen to his music and when I do, Ben preaches to me in ways that I never expect. Hence my undying love for his beautiful piano licks and life applicable lyrics. Recently, two songs off of (his latest album) Songs for Silverman have been really great for me. In "Sentimental Guy," Ben sings:

Little things you said or did
Are part of me
Come out from time to time
Though probably no one I know now
Would notice
But I never thought so much could change

Isn't that the truth? I catch myself saying things that friends and I said regularly years ago, and I think, no one here knows exactly what I'm talking about. For example, I've been saying, "Yawn, figure it out" recently, which is a saying that originated many many years ago. There are quite a few other examples of this, and I'm sure everyone else has experienced the same thing. The other song off of that album I'm loving is called "Time," in which Ben sings:

And in time I will fade away
In time I won't hear what you're saying
In time
But time takes time you know

Because you know that in awhile things that matter today won't matter anymore, but exactly, "Time takes time, you know?"

Oh how I love Ben Folds.

I like to eat them for lunch every day (lime shrimp flavor, add soy sauce, diced tomatoes, crushed red pepper, and some garlic salt if I'm feeling saucy), and if I don't have any in the house I tend to get cranky. I guess it's a good thing cause they are cheap as heck but I'm not sure that they are very good for me.

My puppy, Leia

Awwww.....
She's so cute! I got Leia when I was a junior in high school, and had planned to finish college and take her back from my mother. Well, that never happened because I really don't have time for a dog at the moment, and besides, my mom is totally attached and that would be rather rude at this point. Not that she would even ever consider letting me get away with it.
But I do love going to visit my sweet puppy Leia. Be around her for two minutes and try not to fall in love. Impossible.

Woo Hoo!! After years of sitting in my father's garage, my Sunfire has finally been repaired and returned to my loving care. Well, it wasn't always loving care but you can bet from now on it will be. It is an incredible relief to be driving a car that runs well and doesn't scare the passengers. I find my Sunfire so gorgeous that I just want to go outside and stare at it. I think I will.

String Cheese

Originally uploaded by primalktc.
Mmm, I love string cheese, I have since I was a kid. I was eating some the other day when my roommate looked at me all confused-like. He asked me what I was doing, I said, eatin' some damn good string cheese. He said, What's string cheese? WHAT'S STRING CHEESE?!?!? I thought my childhood was rough, but damn, when you grow up not even knowing what string cheese is, that is true deprivation.

What a Weekend...

Wow, this weekend was crazy for many reasons, and in actuality it doesn't really seem like it's over yet.
It all started on Friday night when these lovely fireworks from Ohio brightened my evening. I love things that light on fire and blow up, especially in mass quantity. Only a few were lit off that night, but it definately made me happy. The next day I went into work at 4, to find that there was no one to work the midnight shift, so I stayed until 8 in the morning. That was EXHAUSTING. But I got to catch up on my sleep on the 4th, when I made my world famous potato salad, drove out to my moms, ate some food, and promptly fell asleep for a good three hours. Then I left, plently of leftovers in hand. Thanks mom! Ah, but the holiday weekend IS over, what a shame. Luckily I've got some good pictures, expect more to come.

They Might Be Giants

flood
Originally uploaded by primalktc.
Oh man, I can't stop listening to this album recently. I loved Flood in high school but I rediscovered it the other day and it's been playing pretty constantly since. How can you not love such classic songs as "Birdhouse in Your Soul," "We Want a Rock," or "Your Racist Friend"? I'm enamored. I may also be driving those people around me absolutely crazy with my repeated use of the "back" button on my iPod.
