Happy Memorial Day!

A day late but still relevant, as I am attending an "Annual Day After Memorial Day Observed" party this evening which should be fun.
Yesterday was filled with excitement as well, with a picnic in the morning (I made the best potato salad EVER) and an outing on my roomies dad's new speedboat later in the holiday.
At a few points yesterday I contemplated the relevence of Memorial Day and decided that it is a little more about food and beer than remembering anything. Which is slightly sad.
But I do like food and beer.

Movie Binge

I saw ten movies this week. I am a self proclaimed movie buff, but ten in a week is extensive even for me. Some were good, some decent, and some I was forced to watch with the teenage girls that I work with. The reviews are as follows:
*Birth (2004): This story could have and should have been told in 30 minutes or less. Fave actor: Peter Stormare (Clifford). D-
*Leminy Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004). Loved the dreary scenery. Fave actor: Emily Browning (Violet Baudelaire). B+
*House of Wax (2005). Watch Paris get killed. Fave actor (tie): Paris Hilton (Paige) and Chad Michael Murray (Nick). B-
*Monster (2003). Okay, I'd seen it before but I still love it. Fave actor: Christina Ricci (Selby). A
*Crash (2005). Racial undertones and sincere drama make it a must see. Fave actor (tie): Ryan Phillipe (Officer Hanson) and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges (Anthony). A-
*Kinsey (2004). Even non-psych students will enjoy. Fave actor: Peter Sarsgaard (Clyde). B+
*The Hillz (2004). Whoa, can you say "no budget"? Fave actor: Paris, of course ;) C-
*Star Wars Episode III- Revenge of the Sith (2005). Great except for the sappy love parts. Fave actor: Frank Oz (Yoda). A-
*Monster In Law (2005). Someone please make JLo stop making movies! Fave actor (and ONLY redeeming quality): Wanda Sykes. D+
*The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004). Bill Murray and Willem Defoe in one hilarious movie? Sign me up! Fave Actor: Willem Defoe. A

Now that I've typed all this up, I realize that it is probable that no one really cares. But you are the one reading my blog, aren't you?

My Surrogate Puppy

Kelly
Originally uploaded by primalktc.
As stated many times before, I love animals. My favorites: monkeys, cats, and dogs. I have my kitty Chonga, but I really miss having a dog in my life. Although I would love to adopt a puppy, I can't have one at my place. A friend of mine is nice enough to allow me to borrow this cute and sweet bundle of joy, Kelly. Today we went for a walk in the woods and then I brought her to meet Chonga. It went pretty well, and I think she will be able to cope with a dog when that time comes. But ultimately, she really has no choice. There are dogs in my future. For now, Kelly will do.

Just got home from watching The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I especially loved Marvin, isn't he cute? I wish I had one... even with the depression, who could resist that face?

Ben Folds

Ben Folds

I'm sitting here, trying to figure out exactly how to express how much Ben and his music have affected my life over the past ten years, and the magnitude of it is overwhelming. From the moment I heard 'Kate' off of some random mixed tape that a friend had my freshman year of high school, my life was changed forever. I was then destined to follow and care for this man's career. At the time, he was in Ben Folds Five, a band which included the very talented Darren Jesse and Robert Sledge. I learned every word of every song and went to see every show that I could. And then they released The Unauthorized Biography of Rienhold Messner and the melancholy of the music made it obvious that I was looking at the end of an era. Ben decided to move to Australia and pursue a solo career. After a small grudge, I was right back in the swing of things, downloading every bootleg I could find just to hear the piano played in Ben's way- a rock sound that I have never heard duplicated. The stories in his songs inspire, comfort, and challenge me in a way that I have never known any other music to do.
Rather than drone on and on about Ben for hours, which I could do, I will just say this: I had the distinct privilege of being ALMOST front row at his show last night. I am still beaming.
Love you Ben.

Bunny Rescue

Baby Bunny
Originally uploaded by primalktc.
My boyfriend and I were leaving my mother's condo complex when I noticed a tiny furball hopping/stumbling across the street. I of course insisted on getting out of the car to see if this tiny little baby bunny was okay. He was drenched, covered in bugs, very confused and scared. After looking all over for a mother, nest, siblings, anything... and finding nothing, we located an emergency animal rescue nearby and drove the little guy there.
When we first got there, we handed him over and were given a form to fill out. It said something like PERMISSION FOR EUTHANIZATION on the top of it. I started freaking out a little bit, as my intentions had been to give him a second chance and not a death sentence (although more humane than what he probably would have gone through out in the cold). When the worker came back out to us, we expressed our concerns and she realized that she had given us the wrong form. She replaced the death form with one that said something like WILD ANIMAL RESCUE at the top, which I thought was much better.
Isn't he cute? I hope he's okay.
